    To Bobcad or not?

OK, I really dont have a CAM package as it stands. A guy from Bobcad is offering me V22, V21, BobArt, and the Training CDs for $662.
    Is it worth it?
I have heard some not great things about it but not bad. And at this price I dont think I can find any other cam packages that will do what it does.

You don't need v22 probably, V21 and bobart should cost around $300. Tell em' you want v21 with bobart and a second seat, for $300, I *know* they can sell it for that. The bobart is actually pretty helpful when you're doing mostly 2D contouring and need a little engraving or relief now and again, it can also convert a bitmap into relief or a 2D contour (think of putting an object or drawing on the fax/scanner and taking that image and making a vector drawing from it).

I don't want to rattle the Bobcad Salescage so I'll ask here.
Is V21 still the code-on-the-fly interface and is it available with a dongle or some other hardware/sw unlock key that doe snot require a phonecall?
    Thanks

Not sure what you mean by 'code on the fly'. No dongle, uses a software key. But, if you're a legitimate owner, there's no reason why you couldn't apply a crack or use a keygen.

What??? Don't want to rattle Bobcad sales people, they are bunch of sociopaths, they just want to use you. Worst salesman ever, they bug the hell out of you until you die. When they ask 'whats it going to take' tell them like I did and it worked, 'don't call me, and don't be high pressure, if I want your product I'll call you, keep calling me and I'm just going to get more pissed off'.
If you really want it, give it a bit of time, act on the fence, you'll get the whole deal for about $199.

Seymore, yes, 21 is like 20 from what I know, (I dont have 21 myself, but didnt upgrade from 20 because I didnt see 'upgraded' software). In 22 they started using post processors.

I have V18, but it is one of the newer releases and don't know of any keygens or crack for it.
Not necessarily a big deal as it's is and has been up and running for a while, just wondering how much longer will they be unlocking it being a 6-year out of date product should I ever need to re-install it.

As stated..once the BobCAD sales group gets your phone number..then they might as well move in and live with you. They are a real pain..and they never go away. Everytime there is a new release, new price, new sales meeting..new promotion..new employee.new day..new pot of coffee....they'll call you.
.. Regardless of your pleads to remove you from the lists and to stop calling..they never quit.
They are rude and interupting. I fell into the trap with V18 and have regretted it ever since. My shop's sales come from phone calls..so I stop what I'm doing to take phone orders..unfortunatly, I also stop what I'm doing to find out that it's BobCAD again. I'm sure I've lost $100s in productivity over the last 6 years or so from thier 'sales calls'.
Don't do it! Run like hell and never look back!!

I use BobCAD CAM to post to my 1986 Anilam Controller on my SuperMax mill - its ok.
Get them to throw in a year of free software support/maintenance and BobNest, too
My $0.02 worth: Its a decent CAM package. The help people are Generally Very Helpful (once in a while you get a bonehead). The training CD's are about the best I've ever seen on anything (seriously - they rival the Video Professor). The CAD package is so/so - but you can get by with it (I use AutoCAD or Intellicad, then bring it into BobCAD - clean it up, CAM and send it out to the machine. Oh- also the CAM package even has a built in communciation package to send the ascii down to your machine. The Lathe module is very good, the gear generator is a nice involute generator, too.
So - all in all - its not terrible.

I kicked around which cad-cam software to get also. I never used any cad program in the past but I ended up getting BodCad V22. I played with it for a while using the video training that came with it, and then I went to a 3 day training seminar. (worth every penny)
To me the software seems VERY intuitive.
We were shown examples of V21 compared to V22 in class and I think having never used anything else that V22 is more powerful in many ways, they are definetly different.
I was drawing parts and generating code the day after I got home from the class.
That said, it does have some bugs that they are working out,..and they will, and it will most likely continue to get better, BUT for the price you can't go wrong. You definitely get your bang for your buck. That is my opinion. People are bashing BobCad all over the internet but so far I have few complaints about V22.

I, like some others here, thought it was an OK package. It was all I could afford so I got by with it for a while. Once I outgrew it and needed something bug free, I bought Mastercam. Bobcad will test your frustration level, but it is a usable product. I have a feeling those that praise it have not used a higher end cad package. As usual, you get what you pay for. RJT

it is an ok package for 2 1/2 axis and 3d. V21 is a stable version and does work. V22 may have some issue but it has come a long way from first release ( I can't think of any software that was bug free when first released. The list includes Vista and Mastercam X)

Not every one who praise Bobcad ( I will also bitch about bobcad) needs a higher end program. You do get what you pay for .At the cost of a 3d seat of Mastercam I can get by with V22. I personaly feel it is a rip off to charge a yearly fee and will not buy any software that you have to pay and pay again. My upgrade cost from V21 to V22 was about the same as the base price for Mastercam's yearly fee $500 and updates also post are free. By no means and I saying that Bobcam is better or in some area even close to Mastercam. But it does work and at a heck of a lot less cash. If you need a top end program the buy Mastercam if you don't. Then there are a few choices.
What I have found is the people that use Bobcad will tell you what wrong with the software. Unlike a few Mastercam user that will not admitt that Mastercam has issue too.

For me, the jury is still out on BobCad. I just bought 3 seats of 21 with art and nest and the training videos, which, I'm sure is how they always sell it (but make it sound like they are breaking some major BobCad law) for 700 bucks. I have been using MasterCam since it was DOS based..V2.8 I think. I am not pleased with Mastercam any more and am pleased even less with the support since a certain employee left. Most of what I have done in the past is 99.99% 3D and I see that Bobcad is very weak there. But it seems quite simple for 2d and for some of the lathe stuff where you would probably cad the shape anyway to get points..you may as well have the system code it for you too.
I have never used mastercam for lathe. I only use it for design and mill toolpaths. So I can't compare MasterCam lathe to Bobcad.
Overall I don't see BobCad as a bad package for 2D and some 3D but I may grow to like it for everything..time will tell.

This is where I do feel Bobcad screwed up. By not having the software read for release. V21 had a very simple program for 3D. Just planner, sprial, radial paths.
Then came V2007 when first released. It had the 3 paths from V21 and Z level roughing , finish and equidistand offset(which most software have and call then other thing). Like all new software had some issues. I did upgrade the first week. But did not use it for code untill last summmer. The reason was the post for Mach 2 and 3 where not read and I did not trust the software yet. The code genorator for V2007 was written by Interfacial. But last fall there was some issue between Interfacial and Bobcad (most likely money). That when V2007 changed to V22. When it changed the added 3D paths where no-longer being sold.About 2 month ago Bobcad started selling the V22 Pro version that once again added the 3D paths. So some people only have some of the option for 3D. I do like the upgrade
Mastercam and other software do have some better paths avaible.
V22 is still a work in progress not a finished release. Yes there are some little bugs in the software that are being addressed. The fouth axis pluggin is what I'm waiting to see. From what I have heard it will be out in March (That does not mean it will be prefict in March).I have done some very complex surfacing in V22 with very good resaults. I just can't bring myself to spending then money yet to switch software. I do need a fouth axis program and have looked at a few. Rhinocam is then one I liked best for the price. That not to say it better than another software. But it is much more than Bobcad will be for a few years to come. What impressed me was the way it can handle piont and mesh files. This is where cad/cam software is going.
UG is devolping a software package to surface from point files. That are catscan of patient taken by doctors for reconstucted surgery (You may have seen the software featured on the Discovery channel used for 3d imaging of mummies in middle east). The files will then be sent out to machine shops for custom made peice like pins and plate also implants.
